Broad St. Construction PhotoThe Broad Street Subway began operating on September 1, 1928 between City Hall and Olney Avenue. Two years later, the subway was extended to South Street, and was again extended south to Snyder Avenue in 1938. The northern end of the line was extended in 1956 to Fern Rock— which included parking accommodations for 637 cars. The Ridge Ave-8th Street Subway, today known as the Broad-Ridge Spur, was opened in 1932 and connected with the Broad Street Subway at Girard Avenue.

The Broad Street Subway also connected with the Locust Street Subway, which opened in 1953 and operated beneath 8th Street from Ranstead Street to Locust Streets then under Locust Street between 8th and 18th Streets. Today, the Locust Street Subway is used by the PATCO High Speed Line.
