Is Your Key Card About to Expire?

SEPTA Key Cards are valid for 3 years and the expiration date as noted on the front in the area marked “GOOD THRU”. Some of the first Key Cards issued will be expiring on July 31, 2019 so please take a moment to check the date on the front of your Card.

If your Card is set to expire July 2019 there are a few things you need to know about getting a new Card, transferring existing fare products, and managing your online account.

1)Protect your Card and fare products by registering your Key Card – if it is not already registered

2) If your expiring Key Card is already registered, purchase a New Key Card and register it to your existing account

3) Transfer any Travel Wallet funds/One Day Independence Passes/One Day Convenience Passes from your expiring Card to your new SEPTA Key Card

4) Update your account on septakey.org

1. Protect your card

The first tip is Register Your Key Card. This is important to protect your Card and fare products in the event it is ever lost or stolen and it makes the process of transferring fares to a new Key Card much simpler.

How do I Register my new Key Card?

Register Online

  • Create an account by going to www.septakey.org and clicking on "create an account" in the blue box at the top left side of the homepage.
  • This takes you to the Account Registration page. Fill in the field with your information and follow the prompts to complete the process.
  • Once you are finished with Account Registration, you will receive an email to Confirm Registration. Click the link in the e-mail and you'll be ready to go.
  • Return to www.septakey.org and enter your username and password in the blue log-in box. Hit enter.
  • On the next screen, there will be a red icon on the left that says Register Key Card. Click on the link and include your 16-digit Key Card number when it asks for "Key Card." You also need to create a PIN for your card.
  • Once you've entered all the information to register your Key Card, click submit - and your Key Card registration is complete. You can now use the Key website to load/reload fares, set up an auto-load account, review your trip history, or report a lost or stolen Card.

Contact the Key Call Center

  • You can also register your Card by phone by calling the Key Customer Call Center at 855-567-3782 (this is not SEPTA Customer Service).

2. Buy a New Key Card and Register It:

You can purchase a new SEPTA Key Card at a Station or Bus Loop Fare Kiosk, at a SEPTA Transit/Regional Rail Sales Location (see the list of locations and map below. You can also go to one of the External Retailers that sell Key Cards. Don’t forget to immediately register your new Card to your existing account – you’ll need to do this before you can transfer any fare products

When you get your new Key Card you will need to pay the $4.95 purchase fee but if you register the Card within 30 days of buying the Card, this amount will be credited to your Travel Wallet for use at a later time.

Please remember that you must make a purchase when you get a Key Card. We recently reduced the minimum amount that you can put in the Travel Wallet to $1.00 so you could make that your purchase when you get a new Card.

3. Transferring Fare Products to a New Key Card

Below are more details about the fare products you may have on your current Key Card. Weekly and Monthly Passes are pretty straightforward – you won’t be able to purchase any of these passes for August on a Card that is expiring.

The fare products you need to transfer from an expiring, registered Key Card to a new Card are:

  • Travel Wallet funds

  • One Day Independence Passes

  • One Day Convenience Passes

You have two options for transferring these products:

1)Bring your current Key Card to a SEPTA Sales Location and buy a new Key Card. Call the SEPTA Key Customer Call Center (855-567-3782), when you are at the Sales Office, and register your new Card to your existing account. The Sales Office agent will then be able to transfer those products to your new Card.

2. Buy a new Key Card and register it to your existing account. Then you can contact the SEPTA Key Customer Call Center (855-567-3782) and ask them to transferany Travel Wallet funds you have on an expiring Card. The Call Center cannot transfer unused One Day Independence or Convenience Passes – this can only be done at a SEPTA Sales location. Please remember that your current Card has to be registered to complete the transfer.

Please remember that you can buy a new Key Card from an External Retail location but they will not be able to transfer any fare products from your expiring Card to the new Card

Monthly Passes

  • July Monthly Pass – will be good for travel through Wednesday, July 31, 2019 so you can continue to use an expiring Card until the very last day it is valid
  • August Monthly Pass - must be loaded on a new Key Card

Independence Passes

  • Independence Passes – loaded on an expiring, registered Card will be valid for travel through Wednesday, July 31, 2019
  • Unused Independence Passes must be transferred to a new Key Card

One Day Convenience Pass

  • One Day Convenience Pass– loaded on an expiring, registered Card will be valid for travel through Wednesday, July 31, 2019
  • Unused One Day Convenience Passes must be transferred to a new Key Card

Travel Wallet

  • Travel Wallet funds can be used on a Card, expiring in July, through the end of the service day on July 31, 2019
  • Travel Wallet funds remaining on an expiring, registered Card can easily be transferred to a new Key Card

4) Updating Your Online SEPTA Key Account

If you manage your Key Card account – including buying fares - online there are just a few things to keep in mind:

  • When you get your new Key Card, and register it, update your account to reflect the new Key Card number
  • If you use the Autoload feature you will have to remove your old Card from Autoload and update the information with your new Key Card information

What to do with an Unregistered Key Card with fare products after the Card Expires

The best way to handle this is to register your Key BEFORE the expiration date. But if you miss the deadline and the Card expires, you can contact the Key Customer Call Center at 855-567-3782 and request a refund/credit for any Travel Wallet Funds remaining on your Card. The Call Center cannot process unused One Day Independence/One Day Convenience Passes.
