SEPTA and Philadelphia Fire Department Spreading the Word about Fire Prevention

Heather Redfern
Public Information Manager

Philadelphia Fire Commissioner Adam K. Thiel says "Fire is everyone's fight." For the past 19 years, SEPTA has joined the Fire Department in this fight by posting fire safety car cards in its buses, trains and trolleys. SEPTA Assistant General Manager of System Safety Jim Fox and Commissioner Thiel installed the first card on SEPTA's Safety Education bus during a ceremony held at Ladder 2 in Old City during Fire Prevention Week. Helping SEPTA and PFD at the car card unveiling were members of the Junior Fire Patrol of the Philadelphia Holy Redeemer Chinese Catholic School and Church and their sponsor Ms. Mei-Hing Lueng.

"The Philadelphia Fire Department is the best in the nation in promoting fire safety," said Fox. "SEPTA is proud to be a partner in this initiative."

The SEPTA fire prevention car cards feature new safety tips each year. The 2018 theme, "S.T.O.P." is designed to educate the public about safe stovetop cooking practices they should follow at home to prevent tragedies. In addition to the car cards, SEPTA has programmed the destination signs on its buses to promote fire prevention week. "The best fire is the first that never starts," said Thiel. "We are thankful for the opportunity to promote our mission with SEPTA."

In addition to cooking safety, Thiel spoke on the importance of having working smoke detectors and closing one's bedroom door before falling asleep at night as simple steps that can be taken to prevent fire deaths. For more fire safety tips, click here.
