The Route 11 trolley is currently operating with bus service over portions of its route because of on-going construction around our neighbors from 60th Street to 68th Street and Woodland Avenue. Construction workers will replace nearly 4,000 feet of track SEPTA trolleys ride over daily carrying customers between Center City and Darby Transportation Center.

The track within the aforementioned area of Woodland Avenue dates back to 1964. Over time, factors like age, leaking water, weather and continuous traffic have caused the street to deteriorate. SEPTA was forced to increase maintenance to keep the tracks in a state-of-good-repair. The new rail will be laid out in pieces first, then bound together to form one very long section. Our engineers refer to the new track as continuously welded rail. Eliminated is the traditional click and clack heard as a trolley passes by. A rubber boot encased around the rail, similar to Chester Avenue, adds a smooth and resilient ride.

Pieces of rail are stored nearby before being placed and connected together to form continuously welded rail.

Construction is scheduled to occur in a rolling work zone, designed to close the fewest amount of street blocks at a given time. There are six phases needed to complete the Woodland Avenue work this summer and each phase scheduled to last approximately two weeks. Construction is slated to finish towards the end of August.

Work will be completed in rolling zones, designed to close as few blocks as necessary at a time.

New concrete and asphalt will give this portion of Woodland Avenue a clean and renewed look to visitors and improved ride for both trolley customers and automobile drivers.
In 2004, SEPTA committed to the residents of Woodland Avenue a renewal program to replace and repair the roadway and track along Woodland Avenue inside the City of Philadelphia. Chester Avenue to 58th Street was completed then and 68th Street to Island Avenue finished in 2006. SEPTA will have met its commitment to the Route 11 and Woodland Avenue with the completion of this portion of the project.

Trolleys will travel along a smooth, resilient surface when this work is complete.

SEPTA realizes the impact any work has on local businesses around the job site. We encourage our customers and local neighbors to continue to patronize these establishments even while our work continues. This list of open businesses around the work zone should help your shopping decisions.
