SEPTA Construction To Close 63rd Street Station
June 10, 2008
PHILADELPHIA, PA – SEPTA’s 63rd Street Station on the Market-Frankford Line will be closed for passenger service beginning at 5 a.m. on Monday, June 16 while a new station in West Philadelphia is constructed as its replacement.
During the station’s closure, work crews will demolish the existing station in order to construct in its place a modern transportation facility. The new station is tentatively scheduled to open in approximately one year.
The new 63rd Street Station, one of six newly designed stations created as part of the extensive Market Street Elevated (MSE) reconstruction project, will be a highly illuminated and vibrant station that will be fully accessible for those with disabilities when it opens.
Market-Frankford Line trains will bypass 63rd Street Station during its closure. While the station is closed, passengers may use the nearby station at 60th & Market Streets for service.
MSE is a critical overhaul of the western portion of the line, which opened for service more than 100 years ago in 1907. The project includes a streamlined, single-column support structure, six new customer-friendly stations, and art-inspired architectural features that will improve the overall riding experience for passengers.
As a result of MSE, new stations have been constructed and are open for passenger services at 46th Street, 52nd Street, 56th Street, and 60th Street. SEPTA will also open the new Millbourne Station this month.
SEPTA’s Community Information Center (CIC) provides passengers, residents and businesses with project information. CIC is open Monday through Wednesday on the mezzanine level at 56th Street Station and from Thursday through Saturday at the Enterprise Center (4548 Market Street). Information is also available by telephone at 215-580-6484 or 215-243-4141.
