Frankford Ave. Corridor Improvements

Improvements Take Effect Sunday, October 11, 2015

The City of Philadelphia and SEPTA have made a joint investment in new technology to improve the Frankford Avenue corridor. This is one of the six commercial corridors in the City to have received Transit Signal Priority (TSP) equipment. The Transit First Committee, a cooperative partnership made up of several City agencies, SEPTA departments, PennDOT, and the DVRPC, was established to improve transit efficiency. These parties will make use of and monitor the TSP system.

TSP technology allows transit vehicles to communicate with traffic signals, extending the green light and allowing them to move through the intersection. When stops are moved to the farside of the intersection, travel time is further improved. General traffic flow also benefits from TSP, not only by keeping buses moving, but by optimizing the signal timing, improving flow along the corridor.

After meeting with members of the public during a public meeting at Holmesburg Library on August 3rd, several changes were made to the recommendations initially proposed by the Transit First Committee. The tables below reflect those changes.

The investment in TSP will be supplemented by several other changes to Frankford Avenue and Route 66 as follows:

A Designated Left-hand turn lane at Frankford Ave. and Blakiston St.

A new left-turn lane at Blakiston St. will give motorists their own turning lane and allow other traffic to proceed through the intersection.

Stop Consolidation/Farside Relocation

Several low-use stops are proposed for elimination, while others would be relocated to the farside of the intersection. This will supplement the TSP and further enhance service and safety on the corridor.
