Four Major PTC Initiatives

  • Separation needed due to PTC incompatibility, increasing freight traffic, commuter growth, and congestion leading to costly delays
    • 57 SEPTA trains and 30 CSX trains traveled this stretch daily
  • Highlights of this project:
    • A third track was added for 4 of 6 miles
    • Innovative yard solution devised to solve the problem that the yard would be on the wrong side - post separation
  • The entire project was completed in less than two years in August 2015
  • Project cost: $38.8M
    • Partially funded thru a TIGER Grant award ($10M)

The final major focus to completing PTC is establishing interoperability with the freight lines - CSX and Norfolk Southern - operating along portions of SEPTA territory. Working with our freight partners:

  • Interoperability Testing with CSX was successfully concluded
  • Norfolk Southern Testing was successfully completed on the Airport Line track one day ahead of schedule (11.01.18)

Additional testing scheduled to take place using Manayunk/Norristown Line track to complete Interoperability by the December 2018 deadline
