SEPTA PTC Strategy

SEPTA was one of the early transit systems to mobilize their PTC installation efforts, thanks in large measure to the SEPTA Board's commitment, even during a time when capital funding availability was at an historical low, to approve the recommendation from staff to make PTC implementation a priority. With this support the Authority moved quickly to develop a comprehensive work strategy; assemble a dedicated project team (SEPTA and Consultants); and garner the full support of individuals from across the organization to get the work done.

Completing the installation of PTC for a system as complex and widespread as SEPTA was, and continues to be, a hard and challenging project. First it required significant changes to four individual systems – Signals, Communications, Vehicles, and the Control Center – and then involved the full integration each of these components to function in perfect unison. To achieve this, SEPTA took the following measures:

  • In-house forces completed Automatic Train Control (ATC) construction efforts – doubled effort to two branch lines at a time
  • 3rd Party Contractor performed labor intensive trenching work for ATC
  • Modified In-House Fiber Optic Cable Installation Program
  • Hired Consultant to do Preliminary Design
  • Hired 3rd Party Contractor for Final Design and Construction
  • Performed branch line modernization efforts simultaneously with PTC
