The Trolley Tunnel Blitz, originally slated to take place over 9 consecutive days in July, will now take place over 3 weekends and weekday evenings in August.

This modified Blitz is intended to allow SEPTA forces to continue to make infrastructure improvements while minimizing the impact to customers.

WEEKEND OUTAGES
Beginning Friday at 8:00 p.m. and
continuing until Monday at 5:00 a.m.

WEEKDAY EVENING OUTAGES
Monday-Thursday beginning
at 8:00 p.m. until 5:00 a.m.

  • Aug. 12-15
  • Aug. 19-22
  • Aug. 26-29
August: 12, 15, 16, 17, 18,
19, 22, 23, 24, 25, and 26

Trolley service will NOT operate in the Tunnel during the dates and times lised above


Changes to Service


  • Trolley Routes 10, 11, 13, 34, and 36 will temporarily divert to 40th & Market Sts.

  • Customers may transfer at 40th St. to the Market Frankford Line for service to/from Center City

  • Staircase Closure: Due to the ADA improvement project at 40th St. Station, customers will use the northeast (westbound platform) or southwest (eastbound platform) stairways at 40th & Market Sts. for access to/from the Market Frankford Line. Please look for signage for additional information

  • For late night travel, customers can transfer to Market Frankford Line Weekday Night Owl Bus Service or the all-night Train service on weekends while this work takes place.


Improvements Scheduled for the Modified Trolley Tunnel Blitz

The primary focus for this outage will be improvement work on the westbound track between 19th & 22nd Sts.

  • TRACK RENEWAL: Replace existing track, including the replacement of rails and fixations

  • POWER: Maintenance and improvements to overhead wires, conduct testing of emergency power backup generators

  • COMMUNICATIONS & SIGNALS: Signal and wire repair work throughout the Tunnel

  • BUILDINGS & BRIDGES: Heavy station cleaning, maintenance, and drain cleaning at 19th, 22nd, 33rd, and 37th St. Stations; painting and tile maintenance, drain cleaning, and the replacement of Tunnel lighting

ALWAYS be aware of your surroundings and LOOK for signage posted at stations for boarding information. DO NOT enter areas that are gated or blocked off at any time. WE are committed to providing YOU with a safe riding experience and environment.

Trolley Tunnel Facts

  • The Trolley Tunnel spans 5 miles underneath Center City from 13th & Market Sts. to the 40th St. Portal

  • On average, 700 vehicles operate through the Trolley Tunnel everyday

  • Rail being replaced in the Tunnel is 30 years in age
