Trolley Tunnel Blitz & Routes 101/102

Trolley Thank You

Customer Thank You

2019 marked the 7th year for our Trolley Tunnel Blitz improvement program. During the extended outage (August 9-18), the tunnel connecting Route 10, 11, 13, 34, & 36 customers to Center City and West/Southwest Philadelphia was temporarily closed while SEPTA forces tackled critical track and power maintenance and upgrades, station upgrades and painting, tile replacement, and maintenance work; and intensive tunnel, track area improvement projects.

As in previous summer Blitz outages, Trolley customers connected to/from the Market Frankford Line at 40th Street for their continuing travel. Our Transportation personnel and Ambassadors were out to provide assistance and answer questions. Every effort was made to minimize the inconvenience but there were two incidents - a police involved event and a mechanical issue with a train - that made travel on the Market Frankford Line difficult for our riders.

This year, during the same time period, there was also an extended outage for the Route 101/102 Trolley Modernization Project with buses substituting for Trolleys to Media and Sharon Hill. This is part of a continuing improvement effort that includes upgrading track switches, installing new track crossovers, replacing track ties at select locations, adjusting the Trolley overhead catenary wire, and converting the signals to a Communications Based Train Control (CBTC) system. This is the Trolley version of Positive Train Control that we have on Regional Rail, a vitally important enhancement for the safe operation of service.

Upgrading our Trolley infrastructure ensures that we can maintain our system in a state of good repair, enhance safety, and improve the quality of your ride. By providing a concentrated block of time to work, during the summer period when ridership is traditionally lower, we made important progress on each of these goals. We greatly appreciate your patience and cooperation while this work took place and we welcome you back to your regular Trolley service.
