Introduction

SEPTA is getting ready to begin the bus network redesign project with a slightly different program structure than originally envisioned. Instead of issuing a Request for Proposal to select a 3rd party team to complete the work, the network redesign and optimization effort will now be led by a multi-disciplinary team, made up of SEPTA staff with support from a select number of subject matter expert consultants.

The SEPTA led effort will still use the analysis completed last year by Jarrett Walker and Associates (JWA) as the basis to begin the work. JWA was tasked with assessing our existing bus network and exploring if a bus network redesign would be valuable to help address the decline in ridership on transit. The result of the study is the Philadelphia Bus Network Choices Report, which can be publicly viewed by clicking the "Report" tab on the right.

The project will last a few years and will involve widespread public outreach and coordination throughout the SEPTA service area, so there will be many opportunities for you to get involved. This website will house information, updates, and public meeting announcements to help you stay informed and up-to-date as the project advances.

Take a Look: THE EXISTING SEPTA Network

2018 Philadelphia Network Map

The above map shows the existing SEPTA bus network within the City of Philadelphia and the surrounding area. This map makes it easier than ever to see where our network is providing optimized service and where we can look to make improvements.

This map is a bit different than our existing map because it graphically presents transit services by frequency. The more frequent the bus route, the thicker and more noticeable the line. This helps you to quickly understand how our network works and how you can best use it throughout the day.
