Positive Train Control Update

Positive Train Control (PTC) System Set to Launch on Fox Chase Regional Rail Line

Safety is a top business priority for SEPTA and one of the fundamental principles guiding the transit industry today. We are proud to be at the forefront of a nationwide effort to meet a federal mandate to install Positive Train Control (PTC) on our Regional Rail network.

PTC is the next generation of signal systems designed to enhance safety by deploying technology interventions when potentially unsafe travel conditions are detected. This is just one of the many initiatives we are working on to improve the safety of SEPTA operations for customers and employees.

PTC Timeline

U.S. Rail Safety Improvement Act Passed 2008

  • December 31, 2015: Original PTC installation mandate deadline
  • December 31, 2018: PTC Mandate Extension approved by Congress & the President
  • April 18, 2016: SEPTA launched PTC on Warminster Regional Rail Line
  • May 23, 2016: SEPTA launching PTC on Fox Chase Regional Rail Line

Why PTC is so important to be safe on and around the SEPTA System

Positive Train Control is the most current generation of signal safety equipment that works to further reduce the chance of human error by:

  • Regulating train separation
  • Avoiding train-to-train collisions at track crossover locations
  • Enforcing all speed levels including temporary speed restrictions
  • Protecting Rail Worker Wayside Safety Zones
  • Regulating grade crossings that are out of service (equipment damaged or not operating properly)
  • Preventing trains from running over a switch that may be set in the wrong position

The introduction of PTC represents an important safety milestone and accomplishment for SEPTA. We greatly appreciate your support and cooperation and we ask for your continued patience as the PTC signal system is introduced to your Regional Rail Line.
